# How to create field data files?

Hello,

In this [example](https://discourse.paraview.org/t/how-to-create-a-global-variable/4492/8), @mwestphal mentioned that field data files can be used to create global variables. an example of such files is also provided in this [reply](https://discourse.paraview.org/t/how-to-create-a-global-variable/4492/20).

I can’t find documentation about such files. Is there an easier way to create them?

Hi,

It is following the [vtk legacy file format](https://docs.vtk.org/en/latest/design_documents/VTKFileFormats.html#dataset-attribute-format), with only the `FIELD` keyword (no `DATASET` needed)

I guess manual writing is the best here.
