Hi,
I’d like to re-establish our offscreen render capabilities in our cluster. Therefore, I’ve installed paraview 5.5.2 using the following options
configopts = '-DPARAVIEW\_INSTALL\_DEVELOPMENT\_FILES=ON -DVTK\_OPENGL\_HAS\_OSMESA=ON -DPARAVIEW\_USE\_MPI=ON ’
configopts += '-DOPENGL\_INCLUDE\_DIR=/usr/include -DOPENGL\_gl\_LIBRARY=/usr/lib64/libGL.%s ’ % SHLIB\_EXT
configopts += '-DOSMESA\_INCLUDE\_DIR=/usr/include -DOSMESA\_LIBRARY=/usr/lib64/libOSMesa.%s ’ % SHLIB\_EXT
configopts += '-DOPENGL\_glu\_LIBRARY=/usr/lib64/libGLU.%s ’ % SHLIB\_EXT
configopts += '-DVTK\_USE\_SYSTEM\_HDF5=ON -DPARAVIEW\_ENABLE\_PYTHON=ON -DBUILD\_SHARED\_LIBS=ON ’
configopts += '-DBUILD\_TESTING=OFF ’
configopts += '-DBUILD\_TYPE=Debug ’
configopts += ’ -DPARAVIEW\_QT\_VERSION=5 -DQT\_QMAKE\_EXECUTABLE=/usr/bin/qmake-qt5 ’

on Centos 7.3 machine.

The compute nodes don’t have gpu and report glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256bit)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 11.2.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
…

I can start the pvserver (–force-offscreen-rendering) and connect to the client. I load a data set and as soon as I change representation from outline to any other option I receive a disconnect showing
GL version 2.1 with the gpu\_shader4 extension is not supported by your graphics driver…

Does that mean that I can’t run paraview on those nodes? Or would a Mesa driver newer than 11.2.2 help?
Any hint is welcome.

Best regards,
Andreas

I can’t remember the minimum mesa version… @martink? You may need a newer Mesa version, but you could also try setting the environment variable `MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE` to 3.2.

It might be that you need 12.0 or later for OSMesa I forget if it is 11.2 or 12.0 that ended up being the version they added in support. Certainly later versions have been shown to work with mesa/llvmpipe.

We use [mesa-18.0.0-rc4](https://gitlab.kitware.com/paraview/paraview-superbuild/blob/master/versions.cmake) in the Kitware-produced ParaView binaries.

By the way @henkela, I highly recommend using the [ParaView superbuild](https://gitlab.kitware.com/paraview/paraview-superbuild/). It makes configuring the ParaView server and any required dependencies straightforward.
