Hey everybody,

first of all thank you very much for all your effort regarding ParaView. An excellent program for post-processing numerical data…

The following happend:

- I made a very very stupid mistake on my system
- I changed the group of all files and folders inside /usr (my fingers were much faster than my thoughts)
- Doing so, the system gets - lets say - crapified
- WIth a live-system, I changed everything in /usr to the root group again but found that also different files had wrong permissions
- Even the vnc server could not connect a new “display” as different permissions and wrong group permissions were set wrongly (never the less, I could resolve most of the problems)

However, paraview is still crashing and I believe it is related (again) to some wrong permissions of some files again but I cannot figure out which files would need to be checked. The error is the following:

```auto
shorty@bin: ./paraview
( 2.549s) [paraview]vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow.:266 ERR| vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow (0x25a77b0): Could not find a decent config
( 2.549s) [paraview]vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow.:484 ERR| vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow (0x25a77b0): Could not find a decent visual
Any idea or any hint is warmly welcomed.
Based on the first message:
```auto
Could not find a decent visual

```
I guess, it is a similar problem compared to the vnc server.
For information purpose: glxgears works, gnuplot too. But not tested any other VTK application.
Thank you in advance,
Tobi
PS: I removed paraview and re-installed it. I also tried the pre-compiled packages provided at your website. The system is an Ubuntu LTS 20.04 system.
Are you able to run glxinfo ? If not, then this is a system issue, not a ParaView issue.
Yes, I can run glxinfo. However, one more information. After exporting the following variable:
```auto
shorty@bin: export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=y
shorty@bin: ./paraview

( 2.281s) [paraview]vtkOpenGLRenderWindow.c:506 ERR| vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow (0x2107d10): Unable to find a valid OpenGL 3.2 or later implementation. If you are on windows and using Microsoft remote desktop note that it only supports OpenGL 3.2 with nvidia quadro cards. You can use other remoting software such as nomachine to avoid this issue.

So as I told, it should be a system problem as I made that mistake. So probably, no support here right? Nevertheless, the new error gives some more insight and hopefully I am on a good way to resolve it.

Thank you for your feedback Mathieu.

Doesn’t mean we can’t help you figure it out, but the expertise you are looking for may not be here.

I will first check the drivers for the graphic card and everything related to mesa and xorg. Will let you know if I get a solution.

Hey everybody, so I managed to get more insight. Hence, is it possible to start paraview using mesa rather than the graphic-card driver?

Indeed, take a look at this:

If you have graphics hardware Mesa is not your best option. To get the best performance from your graphics card you’ll need to install the vendor provided driver. Vendor provided OpenGL drivers are typically much faster of a much higher quality than Mesa’s which can be quite buggy. Many distros now pro…

Simply use --mesa Tobi 😃
Now it works.

Hi Mathieu, sorry, I had a post in progress but did not submitted it. So thank you for your feedback.

For all: the x2go session uses MESA rather than the graphic card which kills ParaView if we don´t use the --mesa Attribute. So the solution (for pre-compiled paraview) is to start it by adding the flag --mesa. Done 🙂

Right, this works with the binary release !
