Paraview-5.8.1 not working on MacOSX BigSur

Hello All: I am unable to run ParaView-5.8.1 (downloaded from https://www.paraview.org/download/) on my MacBookPro which is running the BigSur OS. Symptom: when I launch the application, the “wheel of death” keeps spinning forever. Unfortunately, I need to use 5.8.1 since I have to use this version of the ParaView client to be able to connect to the 5.8.1 pvserver on a computer at a large computing facility. So, I am afraid I will not be able to use 5.9.x. Do you, perhaps, have a more recent 5.8.1 build that I can try, which may resolve the problem I am facing? Any suggestions, please?

Is it an M-1 chip? This is still not supported. https://gitlab.kitware.com/paraview/paraview/-/issues/20352

Alternatively, try reinstalling, as listed here: https://gitlab.kitware.com/paraview/paraview/-/issues/20332

When did you download 5.8.1? Just recently, or a while ago? If it was a while ago, please download it and install it again as there was a minor change to how we sign the packages that may affect your use of it.

Hello Cory, I downloaded 5.8.1 a few minutes ago and noticed the spinning wheel when I clicked on the installed application. I have tried running the client that was installed after installing the 5.8.1 .dmg and, later, the .pkg downloads. No success with both.

Do you have any external volumes mounted on the system that your user account may not have permission to access by chance?

No, there are no external volumes.

If you force quit ParaView 5.8.1, does macOS pop up a dialog asking if you want to report a problem? If so, click yes and copy and paste the error report here, please.

Otherwise, I don’t know what the issue could be. I know people have been able to run on BigSur on Intel hardware without problems in some instances, so there is probably something different about your system.

Just a quick note: On my MacBook Pro, running Big Sur (11.2.2), I am not able to run 5.9.0 either. When I start 5.9.0 and read in a file, it does nothing (no spinning wheel, no heating up of the laptop, …) So, I am unable to get either 5.8.1 or 5.9.0 to work on my laptop.

I get an error “ParaView-5.9.1 is damaged and can’t be opened. You should eject the disk image.”.

I fixed this using the Terminal and the command xattr -cr /Applications/ParaView-5.9.1.app.

This clears extended attributes of the .app folder and all contents.

I too am having the same issue with ParaView 5.8.1 and 5.8.0 where I open the application and immediately get the spinning wheel. When I go to open a database in 5.9.1, I get the spinning wheel. I am running an Intel i7 MacBook Pro running Big Sur 11.3.1. Any fixes?

pv-5.8.1 will not work on Mac OS Big Sur. I’ve switched to pv-5.9.1. while there are a few features in 5.9.1 that do not work, at least I do not have to deal with the “spinning wheel” in 5.8.1. Hope this helps…

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. This problem still appears with 5.8.1 in the latest MacOs Monterey with intel mac. Was this never solved?

5.8.1 is quite old at this point, no follow-on patch releases will be made for it. Please try 5.10.0.

The reason I tried 5.8.1 is because that is the version installed at the supercomputing centre I use (similar situation as in the original post). 5.10.0 runs fine in my machine but it is not supported there. Bad luck.
