Paraview 5.9.1 does not start

on my amd processor windows 10 machine paraview does not startup, using AMD Radeon HD 7700 graphics controller.
5.9.1 works well on my windows 10 intel laptop machine

Please try with 5.10-RC2

Thank you Mathieu, I tried 5.10-RC2 (AMD 64). Unfortunately, this did not work.
I can see it startup in the task manager but it disappears quickly.
My PC has both python 3.4.3 (windows) and Ubuntu python 3.8.10 if that makes a difference.

I am willing to buy another graphics controller to use as 2nd controller… any suggestion on which one to purchase?
THanks,
Mike

hard to say, not yet sure this is a graphical problem. Your GPU should be enough.

I would try to do that first:

Tried several of the script like:

openGLInfo = GetOpenGLInformation()
openGLInfo.GetVendor()
openGLInfo.GetVersion()
openGLInfo.GetRenderer()
openGLInfo.GetCapabilities()

I get an error

NameError: name ‘GetOpenGLInformation’ is not defined

As you can see, I am not expert… help please. Mike

you need first to call from paraview.simple import *

When I execute the below on the computer (running python 3.4) that will not run Paraview

from paraview.simple import *
openGLInfo = GetOpenGLInformation()
openGLInfo.GetVendor()
openGLInfo.GetVersion()
openGLInfo.GetRenderer()
openGLInfo.GetCapabilities()

I get: ImportError: No module named ‘paraview’

On another computer, that runs paraview, I tried running the same code from a python 3.4 shell and get the same ImportError: No module named ‘paraview’

However, running from the Paraview python shell window the code works!
I am thinking that the Paraview on this machine has it’s own newer version of python and is why the code works.

Upshot is… I can not get the openGLinfo on the machine that won’t load Paraview…

I am spending a lot of time on something that should just work… but I will keep trying.

so, do I need to load a new version of python to get the openGLinfo you requested?

THanks, Mike

You need to run from inside pvpython, which sets up the environment correctly to allow that from paraview.simple import * statement to work.

pvpython.exe is shipped with ParaView, in the bin directory next to paraview.exe

HTH,
Aron

Mistake.

Yes, that did the trick.
Results from machine that won’t start ParaView.

Any suggestions?

Thank you, Mike

Please try the following in pvpython:

from paraview.simple import *
Sphere()
Show()
Render()

Hi Mathieu,
I tried these commands on my computer that opens paraview and got a rendered sphere.

On the suspect computer I get this far:
Python 3.9.5 (tags/v3.9.5:0a7dcbd, May 3 2021, 17:27:52) [MSC v.1928 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32
Type “help”, “copyright”, “credits” or “license” for more information.

from paraview.simple import *
Sphere()
<paraview.servermanager.Sphere object at 0x0000027515808070>

The next command, Show() causes the command window to close. Tried this several times.
Thanks,
Mike

what is the output of, from a terminal :

glxinfo
glxsphere

I do not know how to do what you asked…
What do you mean by terminal?
I need hand holding.
Thanks

My bad, I forgot you are on windows.

Please try to update your graphical driver.

Thanks, Yes I tried updating the driver and it says I have the most updated one.
Can we conclude my GPU is the most likely cause for Paraview not starting?

Is there a list of GPU’s tested with Paraview?

Mike

Your GPU should work with ParaView.

Is there a list of GPU’s tested with Paraview?

All modern GPU are compatible with ParaView.

BTW you can try this solution:

Did not work for me.

Mike

Solved the problem of Paraview not opening on desktop.

I downloaded ParaView-5.8.0-Windows-Python3.7-msvc2015-64bit.exe to try an older version and Paraview appeared on my desktop. Of course, I don’t now why, but I did notice during the install I was asked if I wanted certain packages loaded… Maybe the newer versions should include these?
